Heritage
Wellington is the Cultural Capital of New Zealand. The Heritage
Highlights Tour focuses on both the Wellington of yesterday and
Wellington today. You will see the face of Wellington as a modern
cosmopolitan and cultural centre and the contrast of its past
heritage.
Katherine
Mansfield Birthplace is a "must see" for any visitor to
Wellington.
Katherine Mansfield is one of the worlds best short story
writers and her restored family home depicts both the authors
life and the late Victorian period of her childhood.
In the National Archives lies the "founding document of New
Zealand", the Treaty of Waitangi. Signed on the 6th
February 1840, by Maori Chiefs and the representatives of the Queen
of England, this document ceded sovereignty of New Zealand to Britain.
Housed in an historic waterfront building, the Museum of Wellington
City and Sea is reputed to be one of the worlds finest. This museum
contains models, paintings and photographs, which reflect the strong
maritime history of the city.
Old St Pauls Church, designed by Reverend Frederick Thatcher, is
one of the country's finest examples of colonial gothic architecture
and was built in 1866 of New Zealand native timbers - Totara, Matai,
Rimu and Kauri.
New Zealand's Parliament Buildings feature the distinctive Beehive,
and the gothic style General Assembly Library and the old Parliament
Building, both currently under restoration.
These attractions and more combined with the natural splendour
of the city make Wellington's Heritage Highlights Tour an absorbing
and enjoyable experience.
