- Wellington First line of Defence - Fort Balance &
Mt Crawford: Starting with a historical walk, you can explore
and learn about the extensive fortifications at Fort Balance, Wellington’s
principal coastal defence installation. View Telecom’s satellite

a large number of varied walks and a great picnic area with barbeques.
- Mangaone track: The Tararua Ranges that form
the landward boundary of the Kapiti Coast offer varied bush walks

- Writers Walk: Walk from Chaffers Marina to Frank
Kitts Park and experience the Writers walk. Designer and typographer
Catherine Griffiths has created a series of large, concrete typographic
sculptures, unique in their conception, scale, form and construction.
Each text sculpture has a quote by a well-known New Zealand writer
with strong Wellington connections.

- Bush City: Located at Te Papa, take a walk through
a recreated habitat island offering a ‘short walk in the NZ
bush’ and accessed by bridge over a man-made lagoon.

- Red Rocks: Formed 200 million years ago during
submarine volcanic eruptions, you can view the surrounding reserve
with fascinating geology & Maori History. You may witness fur
seals depending on the time of the year
Nature
- Staglands. Established in 1972: With bus access
from the Upper Hutt side you can travel by coach to Staglands. It
encompasses 10ha of land that feature a variety of streams, ponds,
hills and gullies, which have been created and developed over the
years. Touch and hand feed the animals and birds as you stroll amongst
them. Amongst these native, rare and endangered animals, birds and
insects are pigeons, bellbirds, fantails, copper butterflies, ponies,
owls and red & yellow admirals.

- Karori Wildlife Sanctuary: Stroll leisurely
around natural bush, lakes, historic buildings and view a world-first
inner-city pest free environment where some of NZ’s rarest
and most endangered wildlife have been released like the little
spotted kiwi, saddleback, and kaka.

- Island Bay Marine Education Centre: Live habitat
displays of sea creatures that your school can view and various
activities can be provided for all age groups. Afterwards
you could easily go across the road to picnic by the seaside or
see some sea creatures in their natural habitat on the rock pools.

- Lindale Farm: Enjoy the barn yard and farm walk,
or visit the animal barn to handle and feed baby farm animals. Book
into the farm show where you will view a demonstration of shearing
and milking, plus a talk about farming in NZ - you can even hand
milk a cow!
You will also find speciality shops including The Kapiti Olive
shop and the Art Gallery and commercial agricultural based businesses
such as Kapiti Cheeses and Ice creams. With the Farm, these all
form part of the Lindale centre.

- Botanic Gardens: Find yourself immersed in the
26 hectares of beauty in the Botanic Gardens. With a variety of
flowers to view, you can also enjoy some fun in the childrens playground
or have lunch at the Botanic café.

- Wellington Zoo: Wellington zoo is a living
classroom and you can book a 45 minute session with an Education
Officer for up to 35 students. Large grassed areas are suitable
for picnic lunches as well as a kiosk in the centre of the zoo which
can provide pre-packed lunches when pre-ordered.

Southward
Car Museum
Located
50 minutes drive from downtown Wellington - view a marvellous
private collection of veteran and vintage cars in the Southern
hemisphere. Great work has been done to display the vehicles
by founders Sir Len Southward & Lady Vera. Sadly Sir
Len passed away Feb 19th 2004, but his legacy remains for
everyone to see. No organised guided tour but the museum
attendant is available at all times.
